Rich Karlgaard:  René, what was your original mission, how was it progressed, and the fundamental question – why is what you do important to your customers?

René Lacerte:  We think of ourselves as champions for small and medium-sized businesses to help them automate the financial processes that around paying and getting paid. If you think about payables and receivables, people do not expect this number to be true but it is. Ninety percent of businesses still rely on paper to manage their processes and make their payments. If paper is a primary form of making the payment, it ends up being fairly inefficient, error-prone, and lots of challenges. It ends up being a mess. For us, I wanted to focus on solving that mess. I wanted to take care of that pain point and really make a difference for a small and mid-sized businesses. There are six million employers in the U.S. – that is the target market. We have 98,000 businesses today that are on our platform. They use us to interact with two and a half million network members

As I have said previously, I’m no fan of programming or app development. I don’t find myself to be very good at it, but I am truly in awe of what can be accomplished with properly written applications, especially when the applications leverage network and cloud-based technologies to provide enhanced functionality and reporting capability while offering cross-platform support.

There are colleagues of mine who have always shown this ability to tap into a program’s APIs to create helpful dashboards that can be rolled into mobile apps, allowing them to keep tabs of a number of systems or an entire site—all from their smartphones—including integrated push notifications to alert them of potential issues in real time. All this can be created by their hands using software development tools and a little coding know-how.

Because of the pandemic, remote work has become the new normal for many tech companies. 

Firms like Facebook, Twitter, and Atlassian are allowing employees to work remotely permanently, if they wish — a practice already adopted by startups like GitLab — and adapting to new productivity products in the process. It’s not just about the tools a company uses though, but also how they use them. 

StackShare, a website for companies to share what apps they use, has seen more traffic during the pandemic on its pages for remote work tools like Zoom and Google Meet. 

“The most popular tools that we’ve seen on StackShare throughout this whole pandemic have been the ones that help keep culture — help you keep that alive,”  Yonas Beshawred, founder and CEO of StackShare, told Business Insider.

Imran Khan rejected Asim Saleem Bajwa’s resignation.

Islamabad:

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Special Assistant on Information and Broadcasting Lt Gen (retd.) Asim Saleem Bajwa resigned on Monday, amid allegations that he used his offices to help family set up several off-shore businesses.

“I requested the honourable prime minister to relinquish me from the additional portfolio of SAPM on Info & broadcasting. He very kindly approved my request,” Bajwa, the former Pakistan Army spokesman who also served as Commander of the Southern Command, tweeted.

However, he would continue working as chairman of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Authority, Dawn newspaper reported.

The development comes more than a month after Bajwa submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Khan following a report on a website that alleged that he had used his offices in setting up off-shore businesses of his wife, sons and brothers.

However, Mr Khan rejected his resignation at the time and asked him to continue working as his special assistant.

The report alleged that Bajwa’s younger brothers opened their first Papa John”s pizza restaurant in 2002, the year he started working as a Lieutenant Colonel on the General Pervez Musharraf’s staff.

It claimed that his brother Nadeem Bajwa, 53, who started as a delivery driver for the pizza restaurant franchise, another three brothers, his wife Farrukh Zeba and three sons now own a business empire which set up 99 companies in four countries, including a pizza franchise with 133 restaurants worth an estimated USD 39.9 million.

Out of the total 99 firms, 66 are main companies, 33 are branch companies of some of the main companies while five firms are dead now.

The Bajwa family’s companies spent an estimated USD 52.2 million to develop their businesses and USD 14.5 million to purchase properties in the United States, according to
