PS4 update lets parents decide which games kids can chat in

Sony is giving the PlayStation 4 one more big update before the PS5 arrives, and it’s particularly good news for parents. A version 8.00 update releasing today makes multiple additions, including simpler and more adaptable parental controls. Limits on communication and viewing user-made content are now lumped together to make it “easier for parents to understand.” Crucially, kids can now ask for permission to use communications in specific games — you can make an exception if you know a young one will be talking to friends.

Not everything is positive. The 8.00 update removes user-made events and the creation of private communities. You can still use private communities that already exist, but they’ll clearly dwindle without the option to make more. Sony hasn’t explained the move, but we’ve asked for comment.

There are more additions that might offset that decision. Party and Messages are now more closely connected, with a new interface that uses the same groups for party voice chats and messages. Two-factor authentication finally supports third-party authenticator apps during activation as well as sign-ins across PS4, mobile apps and the web. And you can finally mute all mics from the Quick Menu — you don’t have to wade through menus (if your headset doesn’t have a mute switch) just to take a quick break from the action.

Sony is also updating its Remote Play apps for phones and computers to enable PS5 connections, although that clearly won’t be useful until the new console’s November 12th debut.

You might not want to rush to update to 8.00 when there are reports (albeit a handful) of party and friend issues. We’ve asked Sony about those as well. Even so, it’s hard not to be at least a bit sentimental about this update.

Best Buy Early Black Friday Deals Are Live Now: Cheap Games, 4K TVs, Headsets, And More

The wait is over–Amazon Prime Day 2020 is officially live, but you don’t have to be a Prime subscriber or even shop at Amazon to get amazing deals today. That’s because this has effectively become a precursor to Black Friday, and competing retailers are getting in on the action with steep discounts on games and tech this week. Best Buy is one of those retailers running a big anti-Prime Day sale of its own, and it made the biggest move we’ve ever seen to compete with Amazon by announcing its first Black Friday deals will go live this week.

Select deals from Best Buy’s Black Friday ad have gone live today, and they feature fantastic discounts on laptops, tablets, and 4K smart TVs along with Arcade1Up cabinets. Notably, you can buy a Samsung 70-inch 4K smart TV for $530, down from its usual $750–just in time for next-gen gaming. There’s not too much in the way of video game deals–the better prices are at Amazon today–but you can grab The Last of Us Part II for just $40.

The early Black Friday deals are live October 13 and 14, overlapping neatly with Prime Day, but this won’t be the last you see of Best Buy’s Black Friday sale. Best Buy plans to release its full Black Friday ad and offer even more deals later this month.

The retailer is also offering a Black Friday price guarantee this year. If you buy anything during the sale that gets an even better deal before November 28, you’ll be reimbursed the difference. The holiday return period for products has also been extended–anything you buy starting October 13 can be returned for a refund through January 16, 2021.

PS5’s Game Boost Feature Improves Certain Backwards Compatible PS4 Games

The PS5 launches around the world next month, and while there are still many lingering questions about how the system works, Sony has now shared some more details about its backwards compatibility. As with Xbox Series X, it appears a few previous-gen games will be improved when played on PS5 thanks to Game Boost, a feature that gives some PlayStation 4 games a performance boost on the newer console.

As detailed on the PlayStation support website, Game Boost allows certain PS4 titles to “run with a higher or smoother frame rate” when played on a PS5. However, Sony notes that this will only apply to “select” games; it appears the performance boost won’t be applied across the board, as Xbox Series X does with Xbox One games.

The company shed a bit more light on how the feature will work in a PlayStation Blog post. “Some titles with unlocked frame rates or dynamic resolution up to 4K may see higher fidelity. Additionally, PS4 games will also take advantage of some of PS5’s new UX features, but more to come on that later,” the company wrote.

Although we don’t know the majority of the games that will be making use of Game Boost, developer Sucker Punch confirmed that Ghost of Tsushima will take advantage of the feature. The open-world action game will get a 60 frames per second option when played on PS5. You’ll also experience much faster loading times on the next-gen system.

According to Sony, the “vast majority” of the PS4 library will be playable on PS5, although there are a few titles that won’t be compatible with the new system. Sony has also explained how to upgrade some PS4 games to their PS5 versions, and the process sounds fairly straightforward.

However, it appears there are a few quirks
