5G could generate trillions in benefits in the next decade. So why aren’t companies moving faster with it?

In the next ten years, a whopping extra $8 trillion could be added to global GDP thanks to 5G-enabled industries, according to predictions from Nokia.

Research sponsored by the Finnish 5G equipment provider suggests that 5G will underpin the age of IoT, AI, smart cities and autonomous cars, and have a direct positive impact on business performance.

The findings seem at odds with the current context: while the Covid-19 pandemic continues to cripple small and large companies alike, some analysts predict that businesses will focus on near-term survival, and that investments in technologies that are not directly linked to recovery will take a backseat. It’s hard to get excited by 5G when you don’t even get to leave your house.

But Nokia’s research found that, instead of shying away from IT investments, the health crisis has prompted companies to double down on digital transformation programs. The report estimates, therefore, that despite the challenges caused by the pandemic, the next five years will see 71% of companies investing in 5G.

This will be especially the case among industries that have historically lacked the digital tools that the pandemic has now made key to business continuity. Sectors such as manufacturing, utilities and healthcare, which have lagged behind in digitization, will invest extensively in new technologies to build up resilience. 

Faster connectivity has a proven role to play in the process. Nokia’s report claimed that companies currently implementing and expanding 5G-enabled technologies were the only ones to experience productivity boosts throughout the pandemic, as well as the only ones that were able to maintain or increase customer engagement. 

Over a third (37%) of those businesses achieved rapid growth last year, as opposed to only 5% of businesses that are not yet contemplating 5G deployments.

Leaker: iPhone 12 Lineup to Feature Faster Face ID, Improved Zoom, and Longer Battery Life

Leaker Max Weinbach has today shared new “finalized and revised” information about the upcoming iPhone 12 via his Twitter account @PineLeaks.

Weinbach states that the “most important things” about the new iPhones were already revealed by Chinese Weibo user “Kang” via an extensive leak on Friday, but he does offer some specific new information.

Apple is reportedly still intending to ship the “dynamic zoning algorithm” feature, which could allow for faster Face ID. The notch may only be reduced in width on the 5.4-inch ‌iPhone 12‌ mini due to its smaller size. This would be achieved by arranging the components of the TrueDepth camera system more “tightly,” but at the cost of increasing its height. Alleged images of the ‌iPhone 12‌ mini’s screen emerged in July, which seemed to show a smaller notch.

Weinbach believes that all ‌iPhone 12‌ models will gain significantly improved digital zoom via software enhancements, and the ‌iPhone 12‌ Pro and ‌iPhone 12‌ Pro Max will also benefit from improved optical zoom.

Up To 26 Percent Faster In Games

AMD has announced the 4th Gen Ryzen 5000-series based on the Zen 3 architecture, including the 16-core Ryzen 9 5950X Ryzen 9 5900X. AMD claims they will offer up to 24 percent increase in performance in games at 1080p.

Also announced is the eight-core Ryzen 7 5800X for $449 and Ryzen 5 5600X for $229, all launching in November. AMD also claims Cinebench single-threaded scores in excess of 630 points, which is a huge amount faster than either current Intel or AMD CPUs.

The new CPUs feature a unified eight-core complex with lower latency – all cores have direct access to the L3 cache resulting in up to 19 percent IPC uplift. AMD claims it will be the biggest update to the Zen architecture yet, with a front to back redesign. Each core in an eight-core complex now has direct access to up to 32MB cache rather than 16MB.

There’s up to 24 percent increase in power efficiency, with a claimed 2.8x better power efficiency than Intel’s Core i9-10900K. The new CPUs will be available in November. AMD also announced that Zen 4 is still on track and will use a 5nm manufacturing process.

Shogun raises $35M to help brands take on Amazon with faster and better sites of their own

E-commerce has boomed this year, with more businesses and shoppers than ever before turning to websites and apps as a safer, socially distanced alternative during the current global health pandemic. Today, a startup that has built a platform to help individual companies and brands design better websites is announcing a round of growth funding to help them step up to that challenge with faster and better designed interfaces.

Shogun, which lets companies build sites that sit on top of e-commerce back-ends like Shopify, Big Commerce or Magento to let them sell goods and services, is today announcing that it has raised $35 million in funding after seeing its business growth 182% over the last year, with 15,000 companies — including Leesa, MVMT, Timbuk2, Chubbies and K Swiss, as well as household Fortune 500 brands that it declines to name — now using Shogun’s tools, up 5,000 in the last eight months.

Finbarr Taylor, the CEO who co-founded the company with Nick Raushenbush, said that the startup plans to use the company to continue enhancing its two main products — Page Builder for bigger companies and agencies; and frontend, a headless commerce solution for smaller businesses that offers faster page-load times — and to help improve its market strategy.

To date, much of the company’s growth has been organic, with a marketing team of two, and also only two sales people. “So it will be about scaling up those teams as well as our engineer and design and product teams, to deliver on the promises we made to our customers,” Taylor said.

The Series B is being led by Accel with participation from Initialized Capital, VMG Partners, and Y Combinator. The round also has a number of high-profile individuals in it, which speak to Shogun’s credibility in the worlds of e-commerce
