Who Is Driving This Car? Video Of 'Driverless' Fiat In Tamil Nadu Baffles Internet

A viral video appears to show a car moving without a driver.

Tesla may be in the process of perfecting its self-driving cars, but the technology has yet to reach India. So it’s no wonder that this video from Tamil Nadu, which appears to show a car moving smoothly without a driver, has left viewers baffled.

The video shows a Premier Padmini or Fiat car cruising on a road without anyone behind the wheel. A mask-wearing man can be seen sitting on the passenger seat, and there is no one else in the vehicle. The video was filmed by a man driving behind the car, who later shared it on Facebook with a puzzled caption. In the short clip, the ‘self-driving’ Fiat can be seen changing lanes and expertly overtaking other vehicles, apparently without anyone controlling it.

The video was shared on Facebook last week with the caption: “How is this possible?”

Since being posted on social media, it has collected many views with hundreds of baffled comments.

However, some Facebook users offered a solution to the mystery, saying that the man must be driving a car with a two-way pedal system. Such cars with pedals on both sides are used by driving schools, allowing the teacher to control the vehicle too.

Sitting on the passenger side, the driver merely extended his right hand to control the steering wheel and drove the car with experience ease.

Some even identified the man as a native of Vellore in Tamil Nadu and said that they had seen him driving from the passenger seat several times. “Seen him in Vellore,” wrote one person in the comments section. “He lives in Vellore and is near our house,” said another.

This hot take on iceberg lettuce is driving a wedge through the internet

As anyone who lives in Los Angeles will tell you, iceberg lettuce seems to be on the outs while kale still has a hold on the gourmet restaurant community.

For every trendy restaurant that serves avocado toast, there’s another that serves some sort of high-end kale salad with several expensive garnishes. Whole Foods even sells T-shirts with just the word “kale” on them.

A recent opinion piece from Bloomberg pointing out the shifting tides in the lettuce world, however, has brought out some serious opinions on the topic and it turns out there are still plenty of iceberg devotees.

The story, appropriately titled “America Has Lost Its Taste for Iceberg Lettuce,” argues that this year could be the year romaine and other leaf lettuce “finally surpasses that of head lettuce, which is mostly iceberg lettuce.”

That same article also says it might not…which is fair, given the state of the world in 2020, nothing really seems all that predictable anyway.

But opinion columnist Justin Fox forges ahead, pointing out kale is grown in every state in the country — yes, even Alaska.

We also can’t overlook other greens like spinach and romaine, which are also having a moment.

“Such greens are generally perceived as health foods; and, well, affluent people like to buy health foods (if not necessarily eat them),” Fox writes. “Maybe turnip greens will have their big moment next!”

As Americans can argue about everything, not everyone agrees the country has “lost its taste” for old-fashioned heads of lettuce. The divisive story earned some interesting responses on Twitter from both sides.

One person clapped back to the Bloomberg headline, writing people are done with the longtime fan favorite “Because iceberg lettuce is just crispy water.”

PlayStation Creator Is Now Focused On Robotics, Autonomous Driving

The creator of the original PlayStation console is back to make new machines, though they probably aren’t what you’d expect. Ken Kutaragi has moved from video games to robots, and he aims to help human workers with factory jobs.

Speaking to Bloomberg, Kutaragi explained that as CEO of Ascent Robotics, a company founded in 2016, he is not receiving a salary and wants to solve problems caused by the pandemic.

“The COVID-19 outbreak has turned the old argument about robots taking our jobs on its head,” he said. “It’s pretty clear now that if we want to arrive at a new normal, we need more and more robots in our daily lives.”

Increased automation has certainly been a concern across numerous industries, with machines taking the place of cashiers, assembly workers, and even cooks. With the pandemic putting peoples’ lives at risk, however, at least a temporary increase in automation may be necessary. The machines working alongside humans could reduce person-to-person contact which would in turn limit chances for the virus to be transmitted.

In Kutaragi’s case, he’s aiming to create new technology related to autonomous driving and more traditional robotics, including an arm that can pick items out using a camera.

Kutaragi left his position at Sony in 2007, the year after it launched the PlayStation 3. He had served as chairman and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment (now Sony Interactive Entertainment), and was succeeded by Kaz Harai, arguably a more recognizable figure who has spawned countless memes. Harai went on to lead all of Sony as CEO for several years. The PlayStation brand is still strong, of course, with the PS5 due to launch next month.
