Comcast Demos Blistering 1.2Gbps Symmetrical Residential Cable Internet Speeds

Comcast announced that it has managed to deliver 1.25 Gig symmetrical speeds over a hybrid fiber-coax network. The company claims that this is a “10G technical milestone” on the path to future upgrades for consumer internet connections.

In Jacksonville, Florida, technicians for Comcast deployed a system that delivers 1.25Gbps over existing cable lines. They used technologies such as “digital fiber optics, Remote PHY digital nodes, and a cloud-based, virtualized cable modem termination system platform (vCMTS),” which gives the network its power.

According to Tony Werner, President of Technology, Product, and Xperience at Comcast Cable, “Our customers build their digital lives on the foundation of our Internet service, so we continue to push the technological envelope to anticipate their future needs.” He then states that this technology they are building will allow Comcast to push the envelope without digging up yards or starting construction projects. Furthermore, this technology can come to everyone in the future, “not just a select few.”

This sort of development for existing cable infrastructure is a necessity in modern times. Not only does Comcast have to improve networks for higher usage due to COVID-19, but it will also have more competition in the future. If Elon Musk’s Starlink fully launches with his goal of 1Gbps, all ISPs will compete for sales. Right now, Starlink is only on a 60Mbps beta, but it could expand as soon as Musk gets more satellites in the sky.

While there is no mention of cost for the 1.25Gig cable, one could guess it would come in below fiber optic because it is cheaper to use existing infrastructure. At a home in Jacksonville, Florida, technicians have installed the service which is based upon a Distributed Access Architecture (DAA) that Comcast has deployed throughout the area. This advanced architecture includes a suite of software-powered networking technologies, including digital fiber optics, “Remote PHY” digital nodes, and a cloud-based, virtualized cable modem termination system platform (vCMTS), enabling delivery of gigabit-plus symmetrical speeds using existing cable connections. The technology team consistently measured speeds of 1.25 Gbps upload and 1.25 Gbps download over the connection.

Security researchers at Guardicore reverse-engineered the firmware update process for a popular Comcast remote to turn the device into a spying tool.

Security firm Guardicore reverse-engineered the firmware update process for Comcast’s XR11 remote to take control of the device. Researchers interrupted the process to turn the voice-control element of the remote into a listening device.

Once the malicious firmware update was in place, researchers used a 16dBi antenna and were able to listen to conversations inside a house from about 65 feet away.

The WarezTheRemote attack could have affected the 18 million remotes in use around the US. After Guardicore disclosed the vulnerability to Comcast, the company developed a fix that was deployed to all units by the end of September.

The XR11 has a microphone button to allow users to operate the set-top box with voice commands. The remote communicates with the set-top box over a radio frequency (RF) as opposed to an infra-red connection. As the researchers wrote in the research paper on the vulnerability, “RF enables contact with the remote from afar, which makes for a larger attack surface than a remote control would otherwise have, and the recording capability makes it a high-value target.”

Guardicore described the vulnerability in a new paper published Wednesday, “WarezTheRemote: Turning remotes into listening devices.” Guardicore used a man-in-the-middle attack to exploit remote’s RF communication with the set-top box and over-the-air firmware upgrades. By pushing a malicious firmware image back through the remote, attackers could have used the remote to continuously record audio without requiring any user interaction.
