There’s a running joke that those who got their hands on an early PS5 review unit are not allow to touch it on photo or video (maybe not a joke? It’s actually kind of hard to tell), but today, we get to watch Sony quite literally tear a PlayStation 5 apart.

Sony has just released a new video that completely tears down a PS5 to its base components so we can see exactly what’s inside and how it’s doing impressive things like being cold and silent despite all the power it contains.

The video features Yasuhiro Ootori, VP in the Mechanical Design Department of Sony Interactive, going to town on the PS5 with a screwdriver and showing off all the bits and pieces.

A huge focus of the system, probably close to half the teardown video, is on the massive fan, heatsink and a liquid metal cooling system that Sony says took two years to prepare. One common thread running through all the early previews of the PS5 is that it runs silent, and runs cold. In recent days there is talk about the Xbox Series X putting out a lot of heat by contrast. Probably not at the level where it’s problematic or unexpected as some seem to be suggesting, but Sony seems like it may have an advantage in this department, after years of the PS4 sounding like it’s going to explode at any given time when it plays taxing games, or heating my entire office to the point where I need to have several fans on for extended play sessions.

Sony’s rollout of the PS5 ahead of launch here has been…curious, to say the least. They have done way, way fewer hands-on previews with creators and journalists, and we’re just a month away from launch.
