Steamship Authority says website, reservation system both down

People in Massachusetts who are looking to beat the heat on Sunday by traveling to the islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket cannot currently make reservations for ferries.The Steamship Authority announced Sunday morning that its computer servers are offline due to the failure of an air conditioning unit, and that its website and reservation system are currently unavailable.Because of this, no reservations can currently be made online, at the terminals or by phone.Passenger tickets can still be purchased at the ferry terminals using cash or credit card, and all existing vehicle and high-speed ferry reservations are being honored.Any last-minute vehicle travel for Sunday is on a standby basis only until the Steamship Authority’s computer systems are restored. Last summer, the Steamship Authority suffered a ransomware attack that kept the online reservation system down for 10 days.Systems were first affected on the morning of June 2, 2021, and customers were unable to book or change reservations online until June 12, when the Steamship Authority announced that its website was back up and running.Steamship Authority officials said they refused to pay a ransom during the cyberattack, and that the response to the attack included cooperation with state and federal law enforcement authorities.
