ProjX360 CEO Touts App Updates, Business Software Benefits

Some of the most innovative products for the custom industry come from the minds of custom integrators not coincidentally. They do, after all, have first-hand experience knowing their own and presumably others’ needs and pain points.

Also, unsurprisingly, many of these companies sprout up in the business operations/management sector, because there are always going to be opportunities to help owners run their businesses smarter and more efficiently.

Such is the case with Doug Greenwald, who created management software ProjX360 but also is CEO of Creative Sound & Integration in Scottsdale, Ariz. – a winner in this year’s CE Pro Home of the Year Awards program in the Best New Technologies project category.

Greenwald chatted with CE Pro about ProjX360’s CEDIA Expo Virtual booth (still accessible at projx360.cediaexpovirtual.com) in September and the importance of business management software in general.

What were some of your takeaways from the CEDIA Expo Virtual platform experience? 

It was nice to interact with new dealers [for the first time on a large scale] since the start of COVID. One thing I can say is that it doesn’t replace meeting in person and can’t wait until next year when CEDIA [Expo] returns.

How did ProjX360 conduct interactions with attendees? 

So we did two live demonstrations each day and my on-boarding and training director was meeting with existing customers to answer questions and go through best workflow practices of the software. We also had our live chat going and we allowed dealers to request personal one-on-one meetings with us

FOVE Inc today released version 1.0 of the software that powers its FOVE0 eye-tracking VR headset. The latest update introduces a handful of new features that should be helpful for the medical industry.

If you don’t recall, FOVE Inc. was the first company to introduce an eye-tracking VR headset. FOVE launched a Kickstarter to fund the FOVE0 VR headset’s development in 2016, and it began delivering those headsets in January 2017.

After fulfilling its backer commitment, FOVE retreated into obscurity, but it never went away. After four years of development, the company has finally released version 1.0 of its software platform.

FOVE has put most of its attention on the enterprise VR market, particularly in the medical space. With this new software update, FOVE introduced two premium tiers of its solution that better serve professional use cases.

FOVE Pro is a new premium version of the FOVE platform meant for medical researchers. It enables the ability to measure your eyes’ contour, the shape of your eyes, and the angle of rotation of your eyes, which doctors can use to diagnose a variety of disorders. It also allows independent calibration of each eye. The software suite also includes a video player that captures gaze-tracking information and automatically generates a report.

FOVE Enterprise is geared towards businesses that work with large-scale deployments and installations where many users rotate through headsets. The enterprise version adds support for a rapid single-point eye-calibration process, which is useful for shared headsets. FOVE Enterprise also includes support for NVIDIA’s Jetson Xavier NX embedded computing platform, which means companies can assemble purpose-built VR kiosks without a gaming computer.

Facebook updates hate speech policy to ban Holocaust denial

Oct. 12 (UPI) — Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Monday that the company will update its hate speech policy to ban Holocaust denial.

Zuckerberg made the announcement in a Facebook post.

“We’ve taken down posts that praise hate crimes or mass murder, including the Holocaust. But with rising anti-Semitism, we’re expanding our policy to prohibit any content that denies or distorts the Holocaust as well,” the post read. “If people search for the Holocaust on Facebook, we’ll start directing you to authoritative sources to get accurate information.”

The update reverses Facebook’s earlier policy on the issue.

In 2018, Zuckerberg said in a Recode Decode podcast interview that the social media company does not want to ban Holocaust denial posts because people should be able to make unintentional mistakes.

“I don’t think they’re intentionally getting it wrong,” Zuckerberg said on the podcast at the time.

Facebook Vice President of Content Policy Monika Bickert released a statement on the policy change.

“Today’s announcement marks another step in our effort to fight hate on our services,” Bickert said in the statement. “Our decision is supported by the well-documented rise in anti-Semitism globally and the alarming level of ignorance about the Holocaust, especially among young people. According to a recent survey of adults in the US aged 18-39, almost a quarter said they believed the Holocaust was a myth, that it had been exaggerated or they weren’t sure.”

Bickert added enforcement of the updated policy wouldn’t happen overnight since it takes time “to train our reviewers and systems on enforcement.”

Bickert also said that online attacks against many groups are increasing worldwide, according to organizations that study trends in hate speech, and that Facebook has taken several steps to remove such content.

US Air Force sends software updates to one of its oldest aircraft midair

WASHINGTON — For the first time, the U.S. Air Force updated the software code on one of its aircraft while it was in flight, the service announced Oct. 7.

And there’s a surprise twist: The aircraft involved wasn’t the “flying computer” F-35, the mysterious B-21 bomber still under development, or any of the Air Force’s newest and most high-tech jets. Instead, the service tested the technology aboard the U-2 spy plane, one of the oldest and most iconic aircraft in the Air Force’s inventory.

On Sept. 22, the U-2 Federal Laboratory successfully updated the software of a U-2 from the 9th Reconnaissance Wing, which was engaged in a training flight near Beale Air Force Base, California, the Air Force said in a news release.

To push the software code from the developer on the ground to the U-2 in flight, the Air Force used Kubernetes, a containerized system that allows users to automate the deployment and management of software applications. The technology was originally created by Google and is currently maintained by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation.

For the demonstration, the U-2 lab employed Kubernetes to “run advanced machine-learning algorithms” to the four flight-certified computers onboard the U-2, modifying the software without negatively affecting the aircraft’s flight or mission systems, the service said.

“The successful combination of the U-2′s legacy computer system with the modern Kubernetes software was a critical milestone for the development of software containerization on existing Air Force weapon systems,” said Nicolas Chaillan, the Air Force’s chief software officer.

During a Sept. 15 interview with C4ISRNET, Chaillan hinted that the service would soon be able to update the software of flying aircraft, calling the capability a “gamechanger” and describing the challenges involved with ensuring the aircraft could be updated without posing a safety risk.
